Martin Luther King, Jr. Edition

Quote of the Week: "We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies."     Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day of Service

As I compose the blog entry for the week, many service projects are happening across Clarke County and the nation in honor and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contributions he made to our nation. This morning members of our Hilsman family spent time beautifying our campus by picking up trash around the outside of our building and working on our school farm. If you haven't had the opportunity to see what Dr. Stratton and her students are doing with our school farm, I invite you to check it out. Not only do we have blueberry bushes, raised beds full of collards, lettuce, broccoli and carrots; and chickens, but also we are in process of planting an orchard of fruit trees that we received through a grant! We have a couple of beds that community members maintain, and they are able to harvest the fruits of their labor. If you are interested in maintaining one of the raised beds, email Dr. Pam Stratton! As you can see below, the greens that the students are raising are healthy and beautiful. If you are itnerested in some of them, you can purchase some for $2 a bag.  You can pick, or Dr. Stratton will pick them for you.  Again, email Dr. Stratton if interested.

AdvancEd Accreditation

As you may have already heard, our district was visited by a team from AdvancEd (formerly SACS) for our accreditation visit.  It was very affirming to listen to the team leader of that group acknowledge the great work that is being done in this district. I am very proud to be part of CCSD and have the opportunity to work with our students every day. I am even more proud of the relentless passion with which our teachers perform their jobs every day. I have worked in five different schools across three different school districts, and I can honestly say that CCSD teachers (and Hilsman teachers in particular!) are some of the best teachers I have worked with. In case you didn't read Anisa Sullivan Jiminez' article in the Banner-Herald this week, you can find it here. She shares links to the accreditation presentation.

Last week we began a drawing for weekly Pride of the Panthers. We gave away two shirts per grade level to students through a random drawing.  You can see some of our winners below. They are very excited about being able to wear their gold shirt any day of the week!

Students will be automatically entered into the drawing if they meet the following criteria for that week:

1) Perfect attendance and no tardies for the week
2) No zero's or missing assignments for the week
3) Have not moved to the next step on the discipline plan during the week

1) Be nominated by a staff member for exhibiting behaviors that contribute to the positive culture at Hilsman.

Our goal with this addition to our PAWS incentive program is to encourage good work habits and a postive attitude among our students.

Here are our Pride of the Panthers from last week!
