Hilsman is No Place for Hate!

Quote of the Week: "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." - Mother Teresa

This year Hilsman has worked toward being eligible to receive designation as a No place for Hate site through the Anti-Defamation League. One of the goals of the ADL is to foster "communication, understanding, and respect among diverse groups." Earlier this year, we received notification that we would be receiving designation as a No Place for Hate. This of course does not mean that the Hilsman community is perfect; rather, it is a public sign of our commitment to continuing to build a culture of kindness and respect for others.

Our No Place for Hate assembly is going to be a very special occasion. In addition to a representative from the Anti-defamation League, There will be performances by Hilsman students. We will also have UGA wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, UGA swimmer and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Vreeland, and UGA swimmer and 2012 Olympian Andrew Gemmell to speak to our students.

Rising 6th grade Parent Night

On Monday, April 29th, we will host our rising 6th grade parents for an informational meeting. The meeting will be held in the Hilsman new gym and will begin at 6:00 p.m. If you have a rising 6th grader, please join us!

School Improvement Survey

Parents, we need at least 50 more parents to take our survey!
Please take the school improvement parent survey located at this link.  The survey has been shortened to 25 questions this year and should take just a few minutes to complete.  You may complete it now or when you come in for your child's conference. It is very important for us to have your input, as we use this information in our school improvement planning process each year. Thank you in advance.

Energy Conservation Day

Contributed by Ms. Clark, IB Coordinator
In honor of Earth Day, science classes had a Energy Conservation Day. It was a day to have science class without the use of energy--except the sun.

6th grade
Ms. Hughes and Mr. Mosley's classes were charged with seeing who could create the solar oven producing the most heat. Each group was given the same supplies--a pizza box, a black sheet of paper, a plastic bag, and tape. Students worked in groups the day before to create a design and then put it in practice on Friday. They will continue to use their ovens throughout the remainder of the year. Their hope is to be able to cook items before school is out.

8th grade
8th graders'  focus this year was on physics. Thursday during science class, groups were given the challenge of creating a paper rocket.

On Friday, classes met in the old gym to "launch" their rockets with water and Alka-Seltzer tablets. Students were excited to see theirs take-off.
Here are some pictures of the activities:

8th Grade Camp Hilsman

Parents, this week our 8th grade teachers will begin Camp Hilsman, a transition camp aimed at ensuring our students are prepared for 9th grade. Teachers will be reviewing 8th grade standards, as well as previewing 9th grade material. some of the learning activities will occur in small group settings, while others will be whole class. Encourage your student to be engaged in the activities, ask questions, and make sure that they are prepared and ready to be successful in 9th grade in the fall.

New Promotion/Retention Policy

The new promotion retention policy which was passed in November can be found here. The most important item to note is that we will not be having summer school this summer. Therefore, students who are in danger of failing two or more classes (including connections and ELT) will need to attend Saturday School April 27th, May 4th, and May 11th. Administrators and counselors met individually with students who, based on their the class average for the first three quarters, are in danger of failing for the year in at least two classes. We are making a plan with these students and are sending a letter and a copy of the plan home by mail. We want your child to succeed and are working with them to ensure they have every opportunity for success! If you want to learn more or have questions, please comment on this blog or email me at
