A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words...

The Week in Review

Thanks to all the families who came out for our first PTO meeting and Open House/Curriculum Night. Other than open house, it was a pretty quiet week at Hilsman. Many of our teachers were trained on Wednesday in the administration and use of the Scholastic Reading Inventory. This is a tool that will be used to help our students set reading goals, as well as to help us identify students who may need additional support in reading. We are excited about the possibilities the SRI offers. On Thursday, the UGA pre-service teachers worked in many of our classrooms during their ELT periods. This is an exciting component of our partnership with UGA as a Level Four Professional Development School. Working with our teachers and students is part of the class that the pre-service teachers attend each week, taught on the Hilsman campus by our Co-professors-in-Residence. below you can see one of these pre-service teachers in action:

Title I Schoolwide Planning Committee Meeting

This Monday we will have our schoolwide Title I planning committee meeting. All parents are invited to be a part of this planning process. The meeting will be held from 5:30-6:30 in the Parent Center. Please email or call Ms. Griffith (706-548-7281, ext. 29244) to let her know if you plan to attend so we can plan for refreshments.

School Council - Nominations Extended

Parents - We have not received enough nominations to fill our open positions on school council so we are extending nominations through this week. This year we have three openings on our School Council. Information is in the front office if you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else. There are two, two year terms, and we also need to fill the unexpired term of Rico Mack whose child is now in high school. At least one of the positions needs to be filled by a parent who is also a business person in the community. This group only meets four times per year. We will take nominations through August 30th. Voting will take place September 3 - 6 by ballot. Please consider serving Hilsman in this way. We need you!

Teachers as Advisors begins this week and will meet approximately twice per month. On those days we will run our 8 period activity schedule so that students will still meet with all of their classes. Each student in the building is assigned a staff member as an advisor  who serves a group of 10-12 students. During the advisory period, students work with their advisor on lessons related to interest and career exploration, study habits and skills, team building, character lessons, etc. We also participate in lessons that help students complete certain state mandated college and career readiness requirements.

While our Lady Panther softball team won Tuesday night, they suffered two losses on Saturday to some very good teams. The softball team will be back in action on this Tuesday against Prince Avenue. Game time is 5:00 at Cedar Shoals.

Our Cedar C-Team (comprised of 7th and 8th graders from Hilsman and Coile) played in the middle school football jamboree this weekend at Cedar Shoals. The C-Team Jags won their first game 49-0, but lost their second game to CCHS C-Team. Our first regular season game will be a rematch against CCHS on September 5th.

Volleyball will have their first match this Tuesday at 4:30 against Coile. The match will be played in the Hilsman Gym.

Picture Day

Picture Day is this Thursday, August 29, 2013. Because our students have had such great behavior so far this year, we have decided to allow them to be out of uniform for Picture Day. Students are still expected to comply with the Clarke County Dress Code Policy. Failure to do so may result in the student losing their privilege to be out of uniform on subsequent "uniform free" days. We specifically ask that students do not wear jeans that have holes or are ripped, or wear strapless or tank tops. We will call parents to bring a change of clothing if this occurs, and/or provide the student with a uniform to wear.

Our announcements are now a daily Google Presentation, which can be viewed by clicking here. In these announcements there is information regarding sports tryouts, club meetings, etc. To watch our weekly Panther News show, click here.
