Week of January 28th

Quote of the Week: "Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely."
 - Auguste Rodin

No Name Calling Week

February 4-8, Hilsman will engage in activities that affirm our commitment to a culture of kindness and respect by observing No Name Calling Week.  We have activities planned for each day of the week.  On Wednesday, February 6th, we will have our annual Pink Out against bullying and name-calling.  On that day, students can wear pink shirts, pink socks, (and yes, jeans, provided they do not have holes or rips!) to show their stand against bullying. We will be taking orders this week for our "Real Panthers Wear Pink" T-shirt, which is on display in the front office.  They are $6, and can be ordered through the front office.  See Ms. Torres if you are interested.  Payment is expected at the time of order.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Edition

Quote of the Week: "We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies."     Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day of Service

As I compose the blog entry for the week, many service projects are happening across Clarke County and the nation in honor and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contributions he made to our nation. This morning members of our Hilsman family spent time beautifying our campus by picking up trash around the outside of our building and working on our school farm. If you haven't had the opportunity to see what Dr. Stratton and her students are doing with our school farm, I invite you to check it out. Not only do we have blueberry bushes, raised beds full of collards, lettuce, broccoli and carrots; and chickens, but also we are in process of planting an orchard of fruit trees that we received through a grant! We have a couple of beds that community members maintain, and they are able to harvest the fruits of their labor. If you are interested in maintaining one of the raised beds, email Dr. Pam Stratton! As you can see below, the greens that the students are raising are healthy and beautiful. If you are itnerested in some of them, you can purchase some for $2 a bag.  You can pick, or Dr. Stratton will pick them for you.  Again, email Dr. Stratton if interested.

AdvancEd Accreditation

As you may have already heard, our district was visited by a team from AdvancEd (formerly SACS) for our accreditation visit.  It was very affirming to listen to the team leader of that group acknowledge the great work that is being done in this district. I am very proud to be part of CCSD and have the opportunity to work with our students every day. I am even more proud of the relentless passion with which our teachers perform their jobs every day. I have worked in five different schools across three different school districts, and I can honestly say that CCSD teachers (and Hilsman teachers in particular!) are some of the best teachers I have worked with. In case you didn't read Anisa Sullivan Jiminez' article in the Banner-Herald this week, you can find it here. She shares links to the accreditation presentation.

Spelling Bee

All of our spelling bee contestants represented their grade levels well. The competition was strong, and it took nearly two hours to crown a Hilsman spelling bee champ. Congratulations to 6th grader Valeria Garcia-Poza, who placed first, and 7th grader April Wingfield, who was runner-up! Valeria will represent HIlsman at the CCSD Spelling Bee at the end of the month.

Family Science Night

Hilsman Middle School hosted a Family Science Night that included a Conservation Fair and an opportunity for families and community members to view student Science Fair Projects. The Conservation Fair included interactive stations that taught visitors about energy conservation, water conservation, recycling, and the protection of native species and their habitats. Exhibitors included the Water Conservation Office of Athens-Clarke County, Athens-Clarke County Recycling, Bear Hollow Zoo, Georgia Power Company, and the Hilsman Middle School Science & Energy Team. The Science Fair Projects on display were the school’s top projects. The student scientists who had projects on display were scheduled to compete in the Clarke County School District’s Science Fair on Saturday, January 12.

Each interactive station and exhibit allowed visitors opportunities to interact with manipulatives and receive free resources to help them conserve resources. For instance, the Water Conservation Office provided tools to help visitors conserve water in their home. The Toilet Toss and Water Conservation Concentration games tested the water conservation knowledge of participants, and allowed them to learn more at the same time. The Athens-Clarke County Recycling Center led participants in a recycling activity in which they could make a bag from an old shirt. The ACC Recycling Center’s mascot, Binny, meandered through the crowd showing guests sample items that could be recycled in our community. Georgia Power Company provided compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs for all adults and gave children a CFL key chain. Visitors also had an opportunity to see displays that compared the energy use of CFLs and traditional incandescent light bulbs. People could also try their hand at generating enough power to light a light bulb. Most discovered it took much less energy to light the CFL. Athens own Bear Hollow Zoo brought a collection of native animal hides and live animals. Visitors were able to learn about reptiles, mammals, and amphibians that live in our area. The students enjoyed their snake interactions! The Science & Energy Team table included an Energy Knockdown game in which players exhibited their knowledge of energy sources and then were able to test their bowling skills. The Science & Energy Team also shared information about their Trash Hunger Campaign. The team collects trash, sells it, and donates the earnings to the Food Pantry of Northeast Georgia and UNICEF. The Science & Energy Team also held an Energy Star Pledge Drive. The team would like 300 community members to take the Energy Star Pledge this school year. The Energy Star Pledge can be found at: https://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=globalwarming.showPledge&cpd_id=24013.

Hilsman Middle School’s first combination Family Science Night and Conservation Fair was a huge success. Over 300 people attended the event to view Science Projects and learn ways to save the Earth’s resources. The event was organized by the Hilsman Middle School Science Department. Below are a couple of photos from the event.

Our goal with this addition to our PAWS incentive program is to encourage good work habits and a postive attitude among our students.

January 16-17 we will have No Uniform Day incentives for each grade level. Students will earn this incentive this time by having no discipline infractions for the three days prior to the incentive day.

Science Fair

Thirty projects represented Hilsman Middle in the CCSD Science Fair this weekend. Of those, we have nine projects moving on to the next level of competition. I'll share more information next week regarding the winners. All of our students represented us well. While waiting for the interview process to be completed, students had the opportunity to explore interactive stations set up and manned by several departments and clubs from UGA. The students really enjoyed exploring the activities, and especially liked the entomology booth.  I am not sure if it was their fascination with insects, or the fact that UGA QB Aaron Murray was there helping out!

Report Cards

Report cards went home with students on Friday, January 11th. Please ask your child to see their report card. Check parent portal, or contact Ms. Brinkley or your child's homeroom teacher if your child did not come home with a report card.

Congratulations, Academic Team!

Our Academic team placed first in the region at competition on Saturday, and earned the right to compete at the state tournament in Milledgeville on January 26th. We are so proud of the way they represented themselves and the Hilsman community.

Hilsman Athletics

Our Lady Panthers remain undefeated! Both the men's and women's teams won their games against Coile this past Thursday.  Join us at Hilsman this Thursday as we take on the CMS Owls. Tip off is at 4:30 p.m.

Happy New Year!

Quote of the Week: “Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others." - Plato

Welcome Back!

We are looking forward to a great second semester!  On Friday, the faculty and staff spent a few minutes reviewing the first half of the year, and celebrating the great things that are happening at Hilsman.  You can view those celebrations and a sample of our faculty members' commitments to continuing student success here. As students return, we welcome them back into a safe, productive, learning environment and look forward to what the new year has in store for us.

Spelling Bee and Family Science Night

During the school day on January 9th, we will host our annual spelling bee. The winner will go on to compete at the county level competition. Good luck to those who are competing!

On Thursday evening from 6-7 p.m., Hilsman will host our Family Science Night.  You won't want to miss this event! In addition to having our science fair projects on display, we will be holding a conservation fair. Learn about Hilsman’s IB theme of the year – Recycling and Conservation. Representatives from Georgia Power, Athens-Clarke County Water Department, Athens-Clarke County Recycling, and Bear Hollow Zoo will be present. Each business will have an information booth with staff to share advice, information, and resources. Families can learn ways to save green and go green at the same time!

PARK/PAWS

Our Hilsman family committed nearly 2000 Panther Acts of Random Kindness during the month of December. In a recent Education Week blog, research about kindness among middle school students was highlighted. This recent study suggests that kindness is linked to popularity in middle school students. You can find the blog entry by clicking here. At Hilsman, we are planning to continue to promote acts of kindness among our students and the Hilsman community at large. News anchor Ann Curry recently encouraged everyone to consider engaging in 26 acts of kindness to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the Newtown tragedy. You can read more about Curry's invitation to our nation's citizens here

We had a wonderful PARK celebration the last day of school. We introduced our new "I Am Hilsman" T-shirt, by randomly selecting 30 students to receive a shirt out of the over 300 that completed at least ten PARKs. The black "I Am Hilsman" T-shirts are on sale in the front office for $10; however, the gold T-shirt can only be earned by students.  Here are a few photos from the event.

Next week we will begin a weekly drawing and will give away at least two shirts per grade level each week.  Students' will be entered into the drawing if they meet the following criteria for that week:

1) Perfect attendance and no tardies for the week
2) No zero's or missing assignments for the week
3) Have not moved to the next step on the discipline plan during the week

 OR

1) Be nominated by a staff member for exhibiting behaviors that contribute to the positive culture at Hilsman.

Our goal with this addition to our PAWS incentive program is to encourage good work habits and a postive attitude among our students.

January 15-17 we will have No Uniform Day incentives for each grade level. The dates for the specific grade levels are listed below. Students can use their Pawbucks to "purchase" a sticker which gives them the ability to be out of uniform on the day specified for their grade level.

Report Cards

Report cards will be going home with students on Friday, January 11th. Be on the lookout!

Principal's Coffee

The principal's coffee will not be held this Friday, as stated on the district activities calendar. Look for info on another event coming later in the month.
