It's Great To Be a Hilsman Panther!

Quote of the Week: "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

PTO - Rescheduled to March 20th at 5:30 p.m. Black History Program will still be held February 26th

All I can say is WOW! This past Friday and Saturday were exciting for the Hilsman community. Our Mathcounts team placed first at the Regional competition. We also captured the top three individual places as well as qualified two additional students for state competition. Mr. Bacchus and Kevin Manglitz, the OCMS coach, were recognized for their many years of support for the Mathcounts program. State competition is March 18th.

Mr. Bacchus and his friend and rival coach, Mr. Manglitz!
What a victory!

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team won the Division II championship on Saturday. These students worked extremely hard after tying with Clarke Middle for the region championship. The HRRB team will compete for the state title in the championship round held March 9th at the Georgia Center here in Athens.

Division II Champions!

We also had students compete in the Optimist Oratorical Contest this weekend.  As soon as I have the final results I will share those as well.  Rumor has it at least one of our students placed!

8th Graders Visit UGA

On Thursday, our 8th graders visited the Richard B. Russell Archives, toured Sanford Stadium, and ate lunch on the UGA campus.  They had a great time! Below, you can see a couple of pictures from the trip.

Read Across America Day

This Friday, March 1st, is Read across America Day.  Teachers will dress as their favorite literary character, and EVERYONE in the building will Drop Everything And Read at 10:05 on Friday. Several other activities throughout the day will highlight the importance of reading and literacy.

School Dance

Student Council is sponsoring a school dance on Friday, March 1st, from 5-7 p.m. More information can be found in the Panther News and announcements. Please pick your child up from the dance by 7:00 p.m.

Benchmark Testing

We will begin benchmark testing this Thursday, 2/28/13, and continue with testing next week.  Click here to access the schedule.  Our teachers use the results of this assessment to plan for and adjust instruction, so it is important that our students try their best on each test. You can help by making sure that your student gets a good night's sleep (at least 8 hours) and has a nutritious breakfast either at home or at school each day.

Athletics

Soccer season opens this week! This year, most of our ladies decided to run track so we won't be fielding a girls' team. However, the boys' first match is at home this Thursday vs. Coile Middle School. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Rally for the Dawgs is March 3rd.  The school represented with the most people in attendance will win $1000! Students will be receiving a coupon for free admission.  If you would like to help Hilsman win $1000, attend the game and check in at the attendance table at the game and let them know you are representing Hilsman. Tell your friends to be be Panthers for the day and help us out as well! More information can be found in the Panther News, which contains a video announcement from two of the Lady Dawg basketball players.

It's National FFA Week

Quote of the Week: "You will never feel better about yourself by making others look worse."
                                       - Deepak Chopra

National FFA Week is February 16-23, 2013. From the FFA website, "The National FFA Organization (formerly Future Farmers of America) envisions a future in which all agricultural education students will discover their passion in life and build on that insight to chart the course for their educations, career and personal future...FFA Week gives members a chance to educate the public about agriculture. During the week, chapters host teacher appreciation breakfasts, conduct "Ag Olympics" competitions, speak to the public about agriculture, volunteer for community service projects and more."

"The week of George Washington’s birthday was designated as National FFA Week in 1947 at a National FFA Board of Directors meeting. FFA Week always runs from Saturday to Saturday, and encompasses February 22, Washington’s birthday."

We are proud of the contributions made and leadership skills developed by our FFA organization at Hilsman.

We've Put on our Traveling Shoes...

Last week Dr. Blankenship, Mr. Hussain, Mr. Mosley, and two of Hilsman's student teachers traveled to the National Professional Development Schools Conference with our UGA professors-in-residence to present information regarding visits that our teachers are making to each others' classrooms. These visits are designed to give teachers the opportunity to learn from their colleagues and gain insight into their own professional practice.  Here is a picture of our group after we had shared a meal with the rest of the CCSD-UGA group:

This week our 8th graders will take two trips. On Wednesday, our students will travel to Cedar Shoals High School for the first of several transition activities. On Thursday, our 8th graders will travel to UGA to tour campus, use the library, and experience a meal on campus.  They always look forward to these trips!

Celebrate Good Times!

Quote of the Week: "We design our lives through the power of choices." Richard Bach

Celebrate!

Hilsman certainly has much to celebrate this week! Congratulations to our Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team for tying with Clarke Middle as Region champions! The HRRB team will compete at Divisionals in two weeks.

Did you know that 1.7 million teens are homeless? The number one item they request from shelters is a pair of jeans. The Teens for Jeans campaign conducts jeans drives across the country to collect all sizes of jeans to donate to homeless shelters. Led by the Science and Energy Team, HMS collected 800 pairs of jeans to donate to the Teens for Jeans campaign.  We are proud of the way Hilsman families are giving back to the community.  What a wonderful act of kindness on the part of our students and their families!

Finally, our students had a great showing at the Regional Science Fair held at Athens Technical College. Winners from Hilsman include:
3rd Place Winners

Lyndon Brugger - HMS
2nd Place Winners

Mirandah Bellah - HMS
1st Place Winners (will go on to the state fair)

Lauren and Linsey Chen - HMS
Abhu Jadhav - HMS
Geoffrey Mon - HMS
Rachel Hoover - HMS
Northeast Georgia Regional Science Fair Grand Prize Winner of the Junior Division - Lauren and Linsy Chen!

We are so proud of all the students who competed on Friday. Good luck to those moving on to state!

Pink Out - What a Day!

(contributed by Cyndi Clark, IB Coordinator)

Pink everywhere, guest speakers, jeans being collected, photostory lessons, practice tornado drill, solar race cars being made, “I am Hilsman” posters everywhere!! Oh me, on my--what a great day it is!!

As an International Baccalaureate candidate school, HMS decided to pull out all the stops to focus on peace and tranquility. The intent was to enhance the current units which are being taught and to have students think beyond themselves.

Pink was the in-color of the day!! We chose pink to focus on “No Name Calling Week” to emphasis our commitment to be a no bullying/name calling, peaceful, positive school. During lunch, students were asked to reflect on what peace means to them and then post their reflections on the wall.

Gandhi and Martin Luther King were spotlighted in language arts classes as every class had a guest speaker to address peace, individuality, and the future. Throughout the week, lessons focused on prejudice, freedom, identity, and free will and goals.

Our counselors assisted the social studies classes in teaching the meaning and the consequences of having a no name calling environment. This activity followed a “No Name Calling” video which featured our students defining themselves as ‘I Am Hilsman”. Students made posters to proclaim what they can do at HMS to support making the world a better place.

Global thinking, thinking outside of Hilsman Middle School, is a primary focal point of IB. Our hope is our students will begin to understand how their actions, beliefs, and future not only affect them but also their community and the world, and how they can make a difference.

No Name Calling Week/National School Counselor's Week

Quote of the Week: "Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you." -  Princess Diana

National School Counselor Week

This week is National School Counselor Week.  According to the American School Counselor Association website, "National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career." From classroom advising, to mediation, to Teachers as Advisors, and coordinating the mentor program, our counselors work tirelessly to ensure that our students receive the support they need to be successful. Please help me thank Mr. Larry Davis and Ms. Kim Turner for all they do for Hilsman Students.

No Name Calling Week

This week, Hilsman will engage in activities that affirm our commitment to a culture of kindness and respect by observing No Name Calling Week.  We have activities planned for each day of the week.  On Wednesday, February 6th, we will have our annual Pink Out against bullying and name-calling.  On that day, students can wear pink shirts, pink socks, (and yes, jeans, provided they do not have holes or rips!) to show their stand against bullying. In addition to the Pink Out Day activities, we will have guest speakers in all our Language Arts classes speaking about civil rights and the importance of respect and appreciation for diversity. This is a joint activity for Black History Month and No Name Calling Week. Below you will find the activities for each day.

Monday - Hats Off to No Name Calling (students may wear a hat to school to
signify their stand against name calling)
Tuesday - Walk a Mile in Another's Shoes (students wear two different shoes
                                                                   - no slides or bedroom slippers)
Wednesday - Pink Out Day (Students may wear pink clothing to signify their stand
                                                                    against bullying and name calling)
Thursday - Team up Against Name Calling (Students can wear their team jersey,
another sports team jersey, or a Hilsman
spirit shirt with their uniform pants)
Friday - Sock It To No Name Calling (students can wear crazy socks to signify their
                                                                    stand against name calling)

Please note that the Athens Banner-Herald has been informed of these activities and may choose to cover them, especially on Wednesday.
