Happy April!

Quote of the Week: "Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success." Dr. Joyce Brothers

Parent Conferences

Parents, thank you for attending parent conferences this week.  If you did not have an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher, please call the front office to have a conference time scheduled. Also, remember to take the school improvement parent survey located at this link.  The survey has been shortened to 25 questions this year and should take just a few minutes to complete.  You may complete it now or when you come in for your child's conference. It is very important for us to have your input, as we use this information in our school improvement planning process each year. Our goal is to have 100% of our parents take the survey. Thank you in advance.

Congratulations!

Our 8th grade recently placed 1st in our region, and 2nd in the state in the GA Math League contest.  This is a different contest from MathCounts. In addition to placing 2nd in the state, Hilsman had five students in the Top 26 in the state!  Way to go, Panthers!

HilFest!

We are excited about a new community-building event that will take place in just two short weeks! HilFest is a student-led, community event that was created to bring all members of our school community (parents, students, teachers and business leaders) together as one. The event will include fun activities for Hilsman students and their families and information about adult education, health, and career advancement opportunities. Join us on Saturday, April 13th from 1-4 p.m. on the Hilsman soccer field for games, music, food, information, and fellowship.

Parent Conference Week - Early Release

Quote of the Week: "Education is successful when home, school and the entire learning community partner together to benefit students." - Leadership and Learning Center

Parent Conferences, Book Fairs, and Open Mic Night - Oh My!

This is another busy week for the Panther community. The spring Book Fair runs all week in the media center.  Students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair with their ELA class, and parents can visit the book fair during parent conferences on Wednesday-Friday. Book Fairs are a great way to support the needs of the school library, as well as begin shopping for birthdays and holidays. Feel free to stop by the media center this week and check it out!

Parent Conferences are scheduled to take place on Wednesday - Friday this week.  Wednesday is the late conference night for Eastside parents. If you haven't received a confirmed conference time from your child's homeroom teacher, please call or email them to ensure you have a time to meet this week.   It is our expectation that teachers hold conferences with 100% of our families.  This is an important way for us to communicate to you about your child's educational progress.  Report cards will be given out at parent conferences.

Remember to take the school improvement parent survey located at this link.  The survey has been shortened to 25 questions this year and should take just a few minutes to complete.  You may complete it now or when you come in for your child's conference. It is very important for us to have your input, as we use this information in our school improvement planning process each year. Thank you in advance.

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. we will hold our 2nd annual Open Mic Poetry Cafe in the Hilsman cafeteria.  Students, teachers, and family members are encouraged to come and share a poem, favorite reading, song, or other talent with the Hilsman family.  Refreshments will be served.  This is a "come and go" event, so you can stop by for a few minutes, or a couple of hours! We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Hilsman Middle School MathCounts team.  Coached by Shareef Bacchus, the team placed 2nd in state competition this past Monday. For the past fifteen years, Hilsman has placed in the top five at state.  Way to go, team!

MathCounts - 2nd in the state!

Art Show

If you haven't been to see the CCSD art exhibit at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, you can still go this week. The show runs through March 30th. Here is a picture of the Hilsman exhibit. We have some very talented artists!

Motivational Assembly

Tavarres King, former wide receiver with the UGA Bulldogs and a May 2012 graduate of the University of Georgia, spent some time with the Hilsman students on Friday afternoon.  What a kind and humble young man!  He spent a few minutes encouraging students to set goals for themselves, do well in school, and graduate and go to college.  He also took the time to answer questions from the students. We were very appreciative of the time he took from his schedule to meet with our students! Mr. King will be entering the April NFL draft and we wish him well.

Oh, the places we go!

Friday and Saturday, students from Hilsman participated in District Honors Band and in the State Science and Social Studies Fairs.  I don't know the results yet, but as soon as I do I will post! I know that the following students represented Hilsman well, no matter what!

Post Spring Break Issue - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Quote of the Week: "May your troubles be less, your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door." - An Irish blessing

Back to Life, Back to Reality

Well, spring break was nice while it lasted. Now we have to turn our minds back to completing the last two months of school.  I know we Panthers will finish strong!

We have more to celebrate this week, as our Helen Ruffing Reading Bowl team won the state championship for the second year in a row. It's great to be a Panther!

State Champs for the second year!

In other news, our 7th and 8th grade bands performed extremely well at their Large Group Performance Evaluations right before spring break.  In fact, the 8th grade band received ALL Superior ratings from the judges! Mrs. Camp, the band director, reports that is a first for any of her bands in all her years of teaching.  We are so proud of them!

Mayor Denson and Dr. Lanoue came to HIlsman the week before spring break to proclaim March 3-9 as Energy Education Week.  Below are pictures from that assembly:

Mayor Denson with Dr. Blankenship and two SET members

One of the skits from the Energy Education Week Assembly

Good Luck to MathCounts as they compete at the state competition March 18th!

Motivational Assembly

This Friday, our students will have the opportunity to hear a motivational talk by a recent UGA football player who will be entering this year's NFL draft.  This is an exciting opportunity for our students, and the assembly will be videotaped by the NFL for use in a segment about this young man. If your student doesn't have a media release on file and you would like to make sure they do prior to Friday, please contact Ms. Torres in the front office. Students who do not have a release on file will still be able to participate in the assembly, but not the videotaping.

Parent Conferences March 27th-29th

Hilsman will hold parent conferences next week, March 27-29th. Wednesday, March 27th is the late conference day for the Eastside.  Please ask your child for the appointment letter if you have not already received it from them or been contacted by your child's homeroom teacher for an appointment time.  It is our expectation that teachers hold conferences with 100% of our families.  This is an important way for us to communicate to you about your child's educational progress.  Report cards will be given out at parent conferences.

We also need all parents to take the school improvement parent survey located at this link.  The survey has been shortened to 25 questions this year and should take just a few minutes to complete.  You may complete it now or when you come in for your child's conference. It is very important for us to have your input, as we use this information in our school improvement planning process each year. Thank you in advance.

Energy Education Week!

Quote of the Week: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"  - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Energy Education Week

(Information provided by Science and Energy Team Sponsor, Audrey Hughes)
The Hilsman Middle School Science & Energy is coordinating the activities for Energy Education Week and most will take place at Hilsman. Here are some of the activities taking place:

Mayor Denson will be visiting Hilsman on Monday to present a proclamation she has signed, designating March 3-9 as Energy Education Week in Athens-Clarke County. We are excited that she is taking time to visit us.  Dr. Lanoue will be present as well.

Student team members will teach lessons in 14 classes during the week. The lessons will focus on our school's IB project of the year - Trash Hunger - recycling to help end hunger. Clean energy lessons will also be taught.

Information booths will be set-up at area businesses during Energy Education Week. Hilsman Middle School's Science & Energy Team is an Energy Star Pledge Driver. Energy Star Pledges will be collected and energy conservation information will be provided to booth visitors. The team will also have an interactive station at CCSD's Elementary Young Scientist Fair on March 23.

Hilsman Middle School's Science & Energy Team is a member of the National Energy Education Development Program. The goals of both groups is to educate the public about energy, energy conservation, and the conservation of resources. For more information about the national organization, please visit: www.need.org.

As an Energy Star Pledge driver, the team wants to collect 300 Energy Star Pledges, teach 300 other students, and give energy conservation information to 700 people. Here is a link for the Energy Star Pledge: Energy Star Pledge. Please help us reach our goal.  We need 225 more pledges!

School Dance- A Success!

Students had a great time at the school dance this past Friday.  We had a great turnout and everyone was appropriately behaved. We hope to have another dance before the end of the school year. Thanks to student council for sponsoring this event.

Benchmark Testing

We will continue benchmark testing this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Click here to access the schedule.  Our teachers use the results of this assessment to plan for and adjust instruction, so it is important that our students try their best on each test. You can help by making sure that your student gets a good night's sleep (at least 8 hours) and has a nutritious breakfast either at home or at school each day.
