January 13-17, 2014

Quote of the Week: "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Celebrate Good Times!

Congratulations to 6th grader, Colin Frick, and 7th grader, Michael Horvat, for having their essays selected to represent the Elijah Clarke Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution in the next level of competition! Both gentlemen will be honored at a luncheon later this month where they will read their essays.

Teens for Jeans Campaign

This week we begin our annual Teens for Jeans Campaign. This service learning project is important in many ways. Help us collect over 1000 pairs of jeans this month!

MLK Day of Service and 40 Days of Peace

Next Monday is the MLK Day of Service. Hands On Northeast Georgia is the clearinghouse for all MLK Day of Service projects. Please consider volunteering a few hours on that day, and make it a day on, not a day off. It is a great way for our students to earn service learning hours as well! Check out the projects available here.

We would love for all Hilsman families to take part in the 40 Days of Peace beginning MLK Day. Check it out here.

Energy Conservation Fair and Science Night

Our Energy Conservation Fair was a huge success! For the second year in a row we had over 300 in attendance. It was wonderful to see all the great science projects on display as well. Next week I will share the list of our district science fair winners who will be going on to the next level of competition.

Pax Panther is Coming to Hilsman!

The wristbands are here! Please be on the lookout for more information from the PTO regarding when the wristbands will be sold. The wristbands say "I support Pax Panther" and are yellow with black paws and letters. The faster the wristbands are sold, the sooner Pax can take up residence at Hilsman! The PTO will be selling wristbands during lunches for $3 each.

Getting Back in the Groove - Ways Parents Can Help

Parents, many of you ask how you can be an education partner at home to reinforce what your child is learning at school. I came across a blog post, which is for teachers, but has some very practical ways that parents can help their children of all ages at home to reinforce skills that are taught in math. You can find a link to that blog post here. Take a look at the graphic that goes along with the post. The ideas seem simple, yet some of these concepts like estimation, are the very skills that our students sometimes struggle with.

Additionally, here is a link to an article titled "20 Excellent Websites That Make Your Children Smarter."  Some of the ones listed are for younger children, but others are for children of all ages and a few of them we use at Hilsman, like BrainPop.

Our next basketball game is Thursday at Clarke Middle. Game time is 4:30 for girls, with the boys game immediately following.

Students interested in soccer may sign up in the front office. Tryouts will be soon!

Our announcements are now a daily Google Presentation, which can be viewed by clicking here. In these announcements there is information regarding sports tryouts, club meetings, etc. Our weekly news show can be viewed by clicking here.

Not Seeing Enough News?

If you have Hilsman related news to share, please send it to me for inclusion in the blog.
