Thawing Out...

Quote of the Week: “The more man meditates upon good thoughts, the better will be his world and the world at large. ~Confucius

I don't know about you, but I am ready for a full week of school!  This week our students will be off for Presidents' Day on Monday, and teachers will have a work day. One of the items our teachers will be working on is determining how they will ensure that students have the opportunity to learn the remaining curriculum, despite the missed days of school. At least one content area is looking at how they can incorporate virtual, independent assignments as one option.

Open house at Hilsman was a success. We know that some parents and community members did not have the opportunity to come because the 6:00 PM time was canceled; however, please let anyone interested know that they are welcome at Hilsman any time. All they need to do is contact Ms. Joann Griffith, Family Engagement Specialist, or one of our counselors to set up a tour.

Here is a link to the video that we shared with community members when they arrived!

We Are Hilsman

Progress Reports

Because we weren't at school last week, progress reports will go home on Tuesday. If your child isn't happy with his/her grades, they have several weeks to complete missing work, remediate and retake tests, and get extra help. Contact your child's teacher for more information.

Remember that if your child is struggling, particularly in math, we have several online resources to help. Successmaker is available to every child both at school and at home. TenMarks is another great standards aligned resource. If you need help getting your child on TenMarks, contact Mr. Gaddis or your child's math teacher.

African-American History Program

On February 25th, Hilsman will be hosting our annual African-American History program. This event will be bigger and better than ever before, with some real treats in store. Come join us!

Uniform Free Days for Honors Students

We have rescheduled the opportunities for students to be out of uniform if they earned Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, or Pride of the Panther to this week. Each student received a wrist band in a certain color for the award they earned. If your student was absent on Friday, January 31, their homeroom teacher has their award and wristband. If your student believes they earned an award but did not have their name called, please have them email me. We are human, and sometimes make mistakes. :-) Here is the schedule:

Monday—Orange-Perfect Attendance

Tuesday—Yellow- A/B Honor Roll (Includes A Honor Roll)

Wednesday—Green- A Honor Roll

Thursday & Friday—Festive- Pride of the Panther

No Name Calling Week - February 17-21

No Name Calling Week has been rescheduled as well. This week, Hilsman will engage in activities that affirm our commitment to a culture of kindness and respect by observing No Name Calling Week.  We have activities planned for each day of the week.  On Friday, February 14th, we will have our annual Pink Out against bullying and name-calling.  On that day, students can wear pink shirts, pink socks, (and yes, jeans, provided they do not have holes or rips!) to show their stand against bullying. This is a joint activity for Black History Month and No Name Calling Week. It is also one of our activities that we engage in to receive a No Place for Hate Designation. Below you will find the activities for each day.

Spirit Days:

Tues Feb 18th- Walk a mile in another's shoes-wear two different shoes with uniform
Wed Feb 19th- Hats off to No Name Calling-can wear a hat with your uniform
Thurs Feb 20th-Team up against Name Calling-wear a team jersey with uniform pants
Fri Feb 21st-     Pink Out- wear pink with jeans (must wear pink to be able to wear jeans)

Please Help PTO

We are in need of PTO officers for the coming year. There are only four meetings per year. An active PTO is one sign of a successful, thriving school. Consider doing this with friends or structuring the new officers so you have all grades represented for a smooth transition year to year.

Officers: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer. I think treasurer is best served by one person over several years. (Thank you Patty Brooks)

Duties: plan meals for the long day of conferences, do something nice in May
For teacher appreciation, maintain the website/send out emails, box tops, toner cartridge recycling, skate night liaison, be an ambassador for your school, plan meetings (if you can get folks to come), decide on fundraisers & coordinate that, plan spirit nights at local restaurants (Can do a combo night with Cedar on that)

We have used our funds to pay for yearbooks for new & retiring teachers, help with STEM team, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. Dr B would like PTO to provide a welcome bag for new teachers -- which I think is a great idea.

We also need 2 Parent Advisory Board reps.

Congrats to Social Studies Fair Region Participants

Several of our students participated in the Region Social Studies Fair on Saturday at UNG-Gainesville Campus. Hilsman had the most representation of any middle school in the county, and one of our students, 8th grader Audrey Garcia, won 1st Place Best in Region, and will compete at the state fair in May. Congratulations, Audrey!

Food to Kids Food Item of the Month

This month's food item for Food to Kids is Microwave Mac and Cheese. It can be either packets or individual serving size. Let's help out the NEGA Food Bank!

Teens for Jeans Campaign - Extension!

We have requested an extension in the Teens for Jeans campaign. Please bring in jeans on Tuesday! Contact Karen Myers or Jackie Holland, chairpersons for this service project, for more information.  You can drop jeans off in the front office, and I am going to try to arrange for someone to stand out at the car rider line to collect them so you don't even have to get out of your car!

Watch the PPT here, and the video promo here.

Pax Panther is Coming to Hilsman!

We are very close to having the funds to bring Pax Panther to Hilsman. The PTO will be selling wristbands during lunches for $3 each.

Soccer season is upon us! The girls game on Tuesday has been canceled and will be played later in the season. The boys game will be played as scheduled on Thursday, at 4:30 at Coile Middle. Come out and support our soccer players!

Our announcements are now a daily Google Presentation, which can be viewed by clicking here. In these announcements there is information regarding sports tryouts, club meetings, etc. There is also information regarding No Name Calling Week, Service Learning opportunities, and much more.
