Why Are You Proud to be CCSD?

Quote of the Week: “We must be the change we wish to see.” - Mahatma Gandhi

At Hilsman, we have many reasons to be Proud to be CCSD. This Monday, February 10th, we will have the opportunity to show the public why we are proud of our school, and why Hilsman should be THE choice for their child's/grandchild's/niece's/nephew/s middle school experience. Please share about the open house with your fellow community members, and encourage them to come see Hilsman at either 10:30 AM or 6:00 PM on Monday. I could use one more parent at 10:30 and one more at 6:00 for the Q & A panel. If you are willing and able, email me at

Here is a link to the video that we will share with community members when they arrive!

Progress Reports

Also this week, progress reports will go home on Tuesday. If your child isn't happy with his/her grades, they have 4 1/2 weeks to complete missing work, remediate and retake tests, and get extra help. Contact your child's teacher for more information.

Remember that if your child is struggling, particularly in math, we have several online resources to help. Successmaker is available to every child both at school and at home. TenMarks is another great standards aligned resource. If you need help getting your child on TenMarks, contact Mr. Gaddis or your child's math teacher.

Significant Weather Updates

It looks like there may be another winter storm potentially brewing. Guess what the storm is named?  PAX! The main source of information for school closings will always be the CCSD page. I will then repost that information to our Twitter, Facebook, Remind 101, and through email. As soon as I receive information, I will pass it on.

Uniform Free Days for Honors Students

Last Friday we celebrated with each grade level and honored those students who earned perfect attendance, Honor Roll, or Pride of the Panther for Quarter 2. This week we will have opportunities for students to be out of uniform if they earned Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, or Pride of the Panther. Each student received a wrist band in a certain color for the award they earned. If your student was absent Friday, their homeroom teacher has their award and wristband. If your student believes they earned an award but did not have their name called, please have them email me. We are human, and sometimes make mistakes. :-) Here is the schedule:

Monday—Orange-Perfect Attendance

Tuesday—Yellow- A/B Honor Roll (Includes A Honor Roll)

Wednesday—Green- A Honor Roll

Thursday & Friday—Festive- Pride of the Panther

No Name Calling Week - February 10-14

This week, Hilsman will engage in activities that affirm our commitment to a culture of kindness and respect by observing No Name Calling Week.  We have activities planned for each day of the week.  On Friday, February 14th, we will have our annual Pink Out against bullying and name-calling.  On that day, students can wear pink shirts, pink socks, (and yes, jeans, provided they do not have holes or rips!) to show their stand against bullying. This is a joint activity for Black History Month and No Name Calling Week. It is also one of our activities that we engage in to receive a No Place for Hate Designation. Below you will find the activities for each day.

Spirit Days:
Mon Feb 10th- Sock it to Name calling-wear crazy socks with uniform
Tues Feb 11th- Walk a mile in another's shoes-wear two different shoes with uniform
Wed Feb 12th- Hats off to No Name Calling-can wear a hat with your uniform
Thurs Feb 13th-Team up against Name Calling-wear a team jersey with uniform pants
Fri Feb 14th-     Pink Out-wear pink with jeans

PTO News - From your President, Beth Campbell!

Here are the positions and duties that need to be filled at Hilsman next year. What would be fabulous is for folks to go ahead & step up so we can get our ducks in a row. All your officers are moving on to Cedar. I'm already Cedar PTO president.

Many hands make light work. Consider doing this with friends or structuring the new officers so you have all grades represented for a smooth transition year to year.

Officers: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer. I think treasurer is best served by one person over several years. (Thank you Patty Brooks)

Duties: plan meals for the long day of conferences, do something nice in May
For teacher appreciation, maintain the website/send out emails, box tops, toner cartridge recycling, skate night liaison, be an ambassador for your school, plan meetings (if you can get folks to come), decide on fundraisers & coordinate that, plan spirit nights at local restaurants (I would do a combo night with Cedar on that)

We have used our funds to pay for yearbooks for new & retiring teachers, help with STEM team, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. Dr B would like PTO to provide a welcome bag for new teachers -- which I think is a great idea.

We also need 2 Parent Advisory Board reps.

Mom/Daughter Workshop - A Success!

This past Thursday, we had our first Mom/Daughter Workshop, sponsored by Teen Matters. There will be two other workshops in the near future. I will post the dates soon!

Congrats to HRRB! Next stop - Divisionals!

Congratulations to our HRRB team for winning the region competition. Divisional competition is Saturday, February 22nd in Statesboro.

Food to Kids Food Item of the Month

This month's food item for Food to Kids is Microwave Mac and Cheese. It can be either packets or individual serving size. Let's help out the NEGA Food Bank!

Teens for Jeans Campaign - Last Week!

This is the last week for Teens for Jeans! Please bring in jeans this week. Spread the word to your family and friends. Remember, the condition of the jeans doesn't matter. Parents, perhaps your workplace might want to join us in this drive and collect jeans for you to bring into Hilsman. Contact Karen Myers or Jackie Holland, chairpersons for this service project, for more information.  You can drop jeans off in the front office, and I am going to try to arrange for someone to stand out at the car rider line to collect them so you don't even have to get out of your car!

Watch the PPT here, and the video promo here.

Pax Panther is Coming to Hilsman!

The wristbands are here! Please be on the lookout for more information from the PTO regarding when the wristbands will be sold. The wristbands say "I support Pax Panther" and are yellow with black paws and letters. The faster the wristbands are sold, the sooner Pax can take up residence at Hilsman! The PTO will be selling wristbands during lunches for $3 each.

Congratulations to the Lady Panthers - Middle School Champs! We are so proud of their undefeated season. Way to go!

Our announcements are now a daily Google Presentation, which can be viewed by clicking here. In these announcements there is information regarding sports tryouts, club meetings, etc. There is also information regarding No Name Calling Week, Service Learning opportunities, and much more.
