Are You Ready for Some Roundball? The Classic City Championship Is This Week!

Quote of the Week: “We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate—thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising.” - Maya Angelou

This Friday we will be recognizing our students who had perfect attendance, All A's or A-B Honor Roll, or who earned Pride of the Panther for Quarter 2. I am so proud of our students!

PTO News - From your President, Beth Campbell!

Folks,
Here are the positions and duties that need to be filled at Hilsman next year. What would be fabulous is for folks to go ahead & step up so we can get our ducks in a row. All your officers are moving on to Cedar. I'm already Cedar PTO president.

Many hands make light work. Consider doing this with friends or structuring the new officers so you have all grades represented for a smooth transition year to year.

Officers: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer. I think treasurer is best served by one person over several years. (Thank you Patty Brooks)

Duties: plan meals for the long day of conferences, do something nice in May
For teacher appreciation, maintain the website/send out emails, box tops, toner cartridge recycling, skate night liaison, be an ambassador for your school, plan meetings (if you can get folks to come), decide on fundraisers & coordinate that, plan spirit nights at local restaurants (I would do a combo night with Cedar on that)

We have used our funds to pay for yearbooks for new & retiring teachers, help with STEM team, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. Dr B would like PTO to provide a welcome bag for new teachers -- which I think is a great idea.

We also need 2 parent Advisory Board reps.

Food to Kids Food Item of the Month

This month's food item for Food to Kids is Peanut Butter. If every student donated one 18 oz. jar of peanut butter this month, Hilsman would be able to contribute over 750 pounds of peanut butter to the Food to Kids program!  Please consider helping out if you can.

Teens for Jeans Campaign

Keep bringing in jeans for teens! This service learning project is important in many ways. Help us collect over 1000 pairs of jeans this month! Spread the word to your family and friends. Remember, the condition of the jeans doesn't matter. Parents, perhaps your workplace might want to join us in this drive and collect jeans for you to bring into Hilsman. Contact Karen Myers or Jackie Holland, chairpersons for this service project, for more information.

Watch the PPT here, and the video promo here.

Pax Panther is Coming to Hilsman!

The wristbands are here! Please be on the lookout for more information from the PTO regarding when the wristbands will be sold. The wristbands say "I support Pax Panther" and are yellow with black paws and letters. The faster the wristbands are sold, the sooner Pax can take up residence at Hilsman! The PTO will be selling wristbands during lunches for $3 each.

Will You Be a Peacemaker?

Quote of the Week: "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day of Service and 40 Days of Peace

I hope that you had an opportunity to participate in one of the many service projects taking place in our school system and the Athens community today. Let's make it our goal to have a project at Hilsman next year!

Today begins the 40 Days of Peace Project. From the www.40daysofpeace.org website:

Why 40 Days of Peace?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. championed the cause of peace and the “Beloved Community”, yet in America and around the world our communities are negatively impacted by drugs, crime, and violence.

For 40 days, beginning with the Martin Luther King Holiday Jr. in 2014, national and local partners, individuals, families, communities, schools, communities of faith, community organizations and many others will focus on helping to start building a peaceful community.

You can make a difference in your own life and in the lives of others by acting peacefully during this period and help to create a community of peace.

We would love for all Hilsman families to take part in the 40 Days of Peace beginning MLK Day. Check it out here. Each homeroom at Hilsman will be deciding as a group if they want to take the pledge, and have their class name added to the 40 Days of Peace Pledge poster that will be hanging in the main hallway. This is an initiative that ties in beautifully with our status as an IB candidate school, our dream school vision, our Days of Peace, and our school mission and vision.

Celebrate Good Times!

DAR Essay Winners - Congratulations to 6th grader, Colin Frick, and 7th grader, Michael Horvat, for having their essays selected to represent the Elijah Clarke Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution in the next level of competition! Writing Test This Week

This Wednesday, every student in the school will be assessed in writing. The 8th grade will take the 8th grade writing test, while the 6th and 7th grade will take a mock writing test that will be sent to GCA for scoring. Please set the expectation with your students that this is a very important assessment. For 6th and 7th grade, this writing sample is the one used as one of four criteria for advanced content placement in ELA. For the 8th grade, it is a state mandated assessment. Help our students to know that their teachers have been preparing them all year for this assessment as they have been writing daily in almost every class. Remind them to:

  1. Get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the assessment.
  2. Arrive at school on time.
  3. Manage their time, and use the entire 100 minutes to brainstorm, draft, and make their final copy.
  4. Write on the topic given. Their paper will not be scored or they will not be given a passing score if they do not write on the assigned topic.
  5. Transfer their draft onto the Final Copy paper. Drafts are not scorable so if their essays are not on the Final Copy page, they will not receive a score.
  6. Give their best effort. Everyone may not be a Hemingway or Walker, but everyone has something to say.

MLK Day of Service and 40 Days of Peace

Next Monday is the MLK Day of Service. Hands On Northeast Georgia is the clearinghouse for all MLK Day of Service projects. Please consider volunteering a few hours on that day, and make it a day on, not a day off. It is a great way for our students to earn service learning hours as well! Check out the projects available here.

We would love for all Hilsman families to take part in the 40 Days of Peace beginning MLK Day. Check it out here.

Energy Conservation Fair and Science Night

Our Energy Conservation Fair was a huge success! For the second year in a row we had over 300 in attendance. It was wonderful to see all the great science projects on display as well. Next week I will share the list of our district science fair winners who will be going on to the next level of competition.

Getting Back in the Groove - Ways Parents Can Help

Parents, many of you ask how you can be an education partner at home to reinforce what your child is learning at school. I came across a blog post, which is for teachers, but has some very practical ways that parents can help their children of all ages at home to reinforce skills that are taught in math. You can find a link to that blog post here. Take a look at the graphic that goes along with the post. The ideas seem simple, yet some of these concepts like estimation, are the very skills that our students sometimes struggle with.

Additionally, here is a link to an article titled "20 Excellent Websites That Make Your Children Smarter."  Some of the ones listed are for younger children, but others are for children of all ages and a few of them we use at Hilsman, like BrainPop.

Hilsman It's Cold Outside!

Quote of the Week: "Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you. Listen in such a way that others love to speak to you." - Anonymous

FYI- January 6th is an A Day.

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone had a relaxing and restful break. I am excited to see all our students tomorrow! Please remember to bundle up this week. The temperatures will be well below freezing tomorrow and Tuesday, so please wear layers, in addition to a hat and gloves.

I love the semester break, because it gives a chance for us to reflect and make adjustments for a more successful second half of the year. On Friday, I encouraged our faculty to spend some time reflecting on the previous semester, and to share some things they wanted to start, stop, or continue this second half of the year. Parents, I encourage you to do the same activity with your students. Here are some prompts you can use:

  • What is one thing that has hindered a you from being more successful so far this year?
  • What is one thing that has helped you be successful this year that you would like to continue?
  • What is one thing you would like to start doing now that will help you be successful the second half of the school year?

Prior to the break, Ms. Hughes was honored at a reception before Star 94's Jingle Jam concert for being the statewide winner in Georgia United's Teachers Make a Difference contest. Camryn Tanner and her mom were able to join us as a representative of the Science and Energy Team. Below is a photo of us with State School Superintendent Barge:

Ms. Hughes, Dr. Barge, Dr. B, and Camryn Tanner, 7th grader

Also, as we return to school we will be fully 1:1 with technology. Students carry devices with them to each class throughout the day, and return them to their homeroom cart at the end of the day. We have had teams at each grade level piloting these procedures prior to break, and so far things have gone smoothly. Below is a photo of "tech team" members in Mr. Oulevey's class issuing devices to students during homeroom.

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued later this week, Thursday, January 9th. If you do not receive your child's report card, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.

Energy Conservation Fair and Science Night

Our Energy Conservation Fair is scheduled for this Thursday, January 9th from 6:00-7:30 PM at Hilsman. Last year over 300 people attended our Conservation Fair. It is a wonderful community partnership event, with various Athens-Clarke County organizations participating. You will also be able to drop off recyclable materials at the conservation fair. See a flyer promoting the event here. Also, Science Fair projects will be on display for all to see. If you have further questions about the Conservation Fair, please contact Audrey Hughes.
