Week of March 31st

Quote of the Week: “Second only to freedom, learning is the most precious option on earth.” – Norman Cousins

Thank You!

We had a great week of parent conferences. Thank you to the PTO for feeding the faculty on Thursday, our late night. I don't think anyone went away hungry!

Hilsman's World Fair

Save the Date! April 26th will be our first ever Hilsman's World Fair. The purpose of this event is to both have fun as a Hilsman community and to raise awareness of our cultural diversity. Look for more information coming next week.

Spring Picture Day

Wednesday, April 2nd is our Spring Picture Day. Students can be out of uniform if they are having their picture taken. They must still comply with the CCSD dress code. Picture order forms went home last week. Orders must be prepaid. If you need another form, they are available in the front office.

Immunization Changes for Next Year

At Parent Conferences you should have received information on immunization changes for the coming year. If you did not, look in next week's Panther Pointers for more info.

The Golf Tournament was a great success! Thanks to Mr. Gaddis for organizing, and to Ms. Butler, Ms. Luthi, Mr. Martin, Dr. Ezekiel, Coach Varnadoe, and Mr. Dorsey for coming out on a "slightly moist" Saturday to help out and participate. We had 37 golfers who had a blast. The PTO raised over $2000 to be able to send our PSP students who have met the attendance criteria to Six Flags. Way to go!

Parent Conference Week

Quote of the Week: “Second only to freedom, learning is the most precious option on earth.” – Norman Cousins

Parent Conference and Book Fair Week

Parent Conferences – Our spring parent conferences will take place Wednesday-Friday this week, with Thursday being the Eastside late conference day. If you have not scheduled a parent conference with your child’s homeroom teacher, please do so immediately by emailing or calling them. During this conference time, 6th grade students will select their foreign language that they will take for the next two years. All students will select the fine arts course they will take next year.

Book Fair – Our spring book fair is underway! In addition to being a great opportunity for students to buy a book or two that he/she has been desperately wanting, the Scholastic Book Fair is an important fundraiser for our school media center. Please consider helping to support this cause, which helps to provide additional resources for the media center and classrooms, as well as sponsor the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. The book fair will be open on during parent conferences so that parents may take advantage of the book fair as well.

3rd Annual Poetry Café a Success!
We had a great turnout for our Poetry Café last Thursday evening. Many students and parents used their “Risk Taker” IB Learner Profile and shared poetry, including some original poems, with the audience.

An 8th grade student reads poetry.

Food to Kids Food Item of the Month

This month's food item for Food to Kids is cereal bars. Let's help out the NEGA Food Bank!

GACollege 411

One of the activities our students do in advisement is to work on GACollege411.org to complete the requirements of the BRIDGE Bill. We have been working over the course of this year in advisement to assist our students in exploring their interests and researching a variety of careers based on those interests in 6th and 7th grade. Additionally in 8th grade, we have been building a 4 year plan that students will use throughout high school. As a parent of a junior, I can tell you that this was one of the most helpful tools we have had to ensure that my child is making progress toward meeting his goals and his graduation requirements. Ask your child if they have completed their interest survey (6th grade), saved three interesting careers (7th grade), or completed their 4 year plan (8th grade). If not, encourage them to log on to GACollege411.org at home to complete these important tasks. Here is a link for parents to find out more information.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Quote of the Week: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss

Read Across America Day

March 3rd is Read Across America Day, and at Hilsman we will be celebrating by dropping everything and reading at 10:00 AM. We also will celebrate by giving books away to our students, to encourage reading.  This is also a special day for us because last week we learned that we will be receiving a Striving Reader's Grant for the upcoming school year!  This grant will allow us to have an even greater focus on literacy within our school and community. We are excited!

Principal's Coffee

Are you interested in how to help your son or daughter be ready for the CRCT in math?  Come to our Principal's Coffee Friday, March 7th at 7:45 a.m.  Mr. Gaddis will be sharing with parents how they can help their child prepare for the CRCT.

Congratulations, 4-H Winners!

Congratulations to five Hilsman students for winning blue ribbons in the Regional 4-H competition!

CRCT Practice

Would you like for your child to be able to take a practice CRCT and get immediate feedback?  CCSD has a CRCT study guide page that links to Georgia's Online Assessment System (OAS). The OAS provides three practice tests for students in each subject area. Once the test is submitted, the student receives immediate feedback on their answers and why they were correct/incorrect. To access the OAS, follow the directions provided at this link.

Please Help PTO

We are in need of PTO officers for the coming year. There are only four meetings per year. An active PTO is one sign of a successful, thriving school. Consider doing this with friends or structuring the new officers so you have all grades represented for a smooth transition year to year. Middle school PTO is lower pressure than elementary school, and is a great way to stay involved during these important middle school years.

Officers: One year terms - President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer. I think treasurer is best served by one person over several years. (Thank you Patty Brooks)
Possible Committee Chairs:

  • Conference Meals (twice per year)
  • Teacher Appreciation
  • Website/email administrator
  • Fundraiser coordinator (box tops, toner cartridge recycling)
  • Spirit night/skate night liaison

We also need 2 Parent Advisory Board reps.
