Quote of the Week: "Do what is right, not what is easy." Unknown

Title I Parent Meeting/Open House/Curriculum Night

Thanks to those who came to provide input on our Parent Compact. Our annual Title I Curriculum meeting will be THIS Thursday, August 27th, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be immediately followed by our Open House at 6:30. Please join us!

Keeping Our Children Safe

You may have seen the letter from Dr. Lanoue regarding our safety procedures when threat is made against the school. I have linked it HERE for your convenience.

We had a very normal rest of the week. Some of you have had questions about the specifics of the incident, how teachers responded, and what our follow-up will be. I will address what I can here. I cannot provide specific information about the threat as it is under investigation by the Athens Clarke-County Police Department. They were very thorough in their investigation while on our campus.

After school, we debriefed as a staff to discuss this specific situation and reviewed all safety procedures in our district Emergency Operations Manual. We also shared the guidance given to us by our district Police Chief, Fabian Jones, and our district Director of Social Work, Dawn Meyers, which our staff found to be very helpful.

We will continue to be cautious and alert to anything that might seem out of the ordinary and respond appropriately. We have several local police officers who check on us regularly and patrol the area. Our SRO, Officer Johnson, makes regular perimeter checks to ensure that our building is secure throughout the day. If you have questions about our district emergency procedures you can contact our district Security Department. If you would like to talk to our counselors, Joy Moore or Tanesha Callahan, about how to talk to your children about any of their concerns, their contact information is: or

This week students received their Personal Learning Devices (PLDs). Below are some related links, including a list of digital resources your child can access at home, as well as the Handbook (both English and Spanish versions). The district is aware that there has been some connectivity issues at home related to one of our filters. They are working to resolve that issue.

Counseling News

Hilsman school counselors are committed to removing barriers to student's academic and/or personal success. As a result, Hilsman school counselors provide a wide array of services, including individual and small group counseling and classroom guidance. We also collaborate with families, mental health agencies, and other community stakeholders to ensure students' needs are met so that they have full access to their education.

If you do not wish to have your child see or speak with the school counselors at Hilsman, and would like to opt-out of all the counseling services we provide, please contact Autumn Joy Moore at #706.548.7281 x21410 so that we can respect your wishes as parent(s)/guardian(s).

Please be advised that if you do choose to opt-out of counseling services, if certain situations occur, we are obligated to see your child. More specifically, if there is a suspicion of child abuse or neglect or if your child threatens to harm him/herself, then he/she will be referred to the counseling office.

If you have any questions/concerns, please contact me at the number listed above or via email at

We hope that you will be open to our services and we look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child this school year!

Picture Day!!!

Thursday, August 27th is Picture Day at Hilsman. Students may be out of uniform as long as they follow the CCSD Dress Code Guidelines. Specifically we ask that students do not wear tank tops, sheer blouses, or jeans with rips or holes. Students should still wear close-toed shoes.

Peachtree Portraits our photographer, is offering parents the opportunity to pre-order their fall pictures online prior to picture day. When ordering prior to fall picture day, parents will receive 8 wallet individuals free!

How do you do this?

Below is a link for our school. Follow the easy ordering instructions and print out a receipt for their son/daughter to take to picture day. The photographer will also have a list of those who have prepaid. It’s just that easy! You may also wait to pay for pictures once they arrive.

Here is the link for the school:
