Fall Parent Conference Week - Early Release

Quote of the Week:

Tuesday is a B day.

Parent Conferences - October 14-16

Parent conferences will be held October 14-17th. Students will be released at 1:30 each day. Our late night for conferences will be Wednesday, October 14th. Teachers began sending scheduling information home this past week. Please call the school if you have not been contacted to schedule a conference.

For those of you new to middle school conferences, the homeroom teacher typically holds the conference with input from the entire team. This year, some conferences will be held with the entire team. There will be important information given about advanced content criteria as well as promotion/retention. Also, while you are at the school for parent conferences, please go ahead and take a few minutes to complete the Georgia Parent Survey.

The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, we hope you will complete the survey while in the building for parent conferences. All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

Parents may access a link to the Georgia Parent Survey under the "School Links" section of each school's webpage, or by clicking on the link below.

SET Updates

October is Energy Awareness Month & the month for our school's annual Trick or Treat for UNICEF Campaign.

The Green Team, Science & Energy Team (SET), Special Education Classes, Agri-Science Classes, Art Classes, Foreign Language Classes, and 21st Century Learners will be doing more during the month of October to promote green and energy saving initiatives at Hilsman. This includes a commitment to recycling more classroom, office, and cafeteria waste. Hilsman will also begin composting lunchroom waste from the cafeteria as soon as the compost area is ready in the garden. SET members will have information booths open during parent conferences and they will begin their annual Energy Star Pledge Drive. A link to the pledge is here: Hilsman Energy Star Pledge Drive. Feel free to share this link with friends, family, and others. Our goal is 1000 pledge items this school year.

Trash Hunger

Our school’s Trash Hunger Campaign contributions from Hilsman students and staff are down this year. We need your trash! It reduces landfill waste and helps hungry people all over Northeast Georgia and the world. Please review this slideshow detailing how our donation dollars are used:

 Hilsman UNICEF 2015 Campaign

The IB & Green School Committees will sponsor a pizza party for each grade level homeroom that collects the most funds for UNICEF this Halloween season. Competition instructions are located here:

If you know of others that would like to support UNICEF, but prefer to pay by credit card and receive a direct receipt, they may do so at our on-line fundraiser: Hilsman 2015 UNICEF Campaign

Recycle Bowl

We are competing against other Clarke County Schools in the Recycle Bowl Competition through November 16. Let's win this contest by recycling everything we can!

Rise Up and Recycle

Finally, we are enrolled in the Atlanta Falcons 2015 Rise Up & Recycle Campaign. We can win, but we need to improve our existing program. Let's all make an effort to improve our recycling efforts in the classroom, in the cafeteria, and at home.

BOE Recognition

At this month's BOE meeting, two students and one Hilsman teacher were recognized. Tristan Lankford and Thomas Peters, both 8th graders, were recognized for being selected to the State Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. Hilsman is the only CCSD middle school with representatives on the council, and we are very proud of their leadership!

Renee Smith, Agriscience teacher at Hilsman, was recognized for being selected as the ACTE Region New Teacher of the Year. Ms. Smith previously taught in South Georgia, and is one of five finalists for National New Teacher of the Year.
