Red Ribbon Week!

Quote of the Week:

Monday is an A day.

Benchmarks Begin This Week

This week we will begin our Fall administration of our district's benchmarks. Benchmarks will be administered in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. All students in grades 6th-8th will be administered the test on the days identified below. The teachers have done an outstanding job of preparing our students for the assesments and I have no doubt that our students will rise and meet/exceed the expectations. You are encouraged to ensure that your child is present and on time at school. We are striving to have 100% participation! Also, encourage your child to relax and to do their best. We are The Panthers and all we do is WIN!

Science: October 28th

Georgia Parent Survey

The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, we hope you will complete the survey while in the building for parent conferences. All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

Parents may access a link to the Georgia Parent Survey under the "School Links" section of each school's webpage, or by clicking on the link below.

ENERGY AWARENESS MONTH

It is Energy Awareness Month and a great time to learn how to save energy. Saving energy saves resources and dollars! A great place to start is to take the Energy Star Pledge. A link to the pledge is here: Hilsman Energy Star Pledge Drive. Once a person completes the pledge, they will receive energy saving tips and rebate offers from local utilities. Feel free to share this link with others. Our school goal is 1000 pledges this year.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF is this week, but what is "UNICEF"? UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund. UNICEF began in the aftermath of World War II, supplying dried milk, nutritional supplements, medicines, immunizations and other urgent assistance to help starving and ill children in Europe, the Middle East and China. Today UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives by working to ensure child rights and providing health care, immunizations, nutrition, access to safe water and sanitation services, basic education, protection and emergency relief. UNICEF has helped save more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization. UNICEF is a 4 star charity. For every donor dollar, 90.2 cents goes toward programs and services that directly help children; 7.1 cents is spent on fundraising costs and 2.7 cents on administration. UNICEF's 990 tax forms are available online.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF at Hilsman begins this week!

With the hurricane in Mexico, Syrian refugee crisis, drought in Africa...there are children everywhere in need of emergency help. Details about our campaign at Hilsman can be found here:

If you know of donors that prefer to pay by credit card instead of the orange Trick or Treat box, they may donate through our on-line fundraiser. A link is here: https://www.crowdrise.com/setunicef2014. The video shown in the on-line fundraiser tells donors what UNICEF does and how it helps children.

The IB & Green School Committees will sponsor a pizza party for each grade level homeroom that collects the most funds for UNICEF this Halloween season. There will also be prize drawings for individual student and teacher participants.

21st Century CLC and Panther Cafe a Fun Time for All!

Hilsman’s Panther Cafe and 21st Century Community Learning Center teamed up for a powerful morning of engaging parents, students, and other community stakeholders in literacy and STE[A]M activities. After a delicious breakfast prepared before our eyes by one of Hilsman’s former students, now a local chef, we shared some of the 21st CCLC students’ photography, videos, and arcade games. We even had a paper airplane contest before going to the media center where we examined “The Art in Language Arts” (work by Mr. Blake’s students) checked out books, and discussed the importance of literacy and why we write,

Mr. Blake, Ms. Gonzalez, Ms. Johns,  Ms. Micheletti, Dr. Blankenship, as well as our UGA student partners were available to guide the experience.

Plan now to join us Saturday,  November 14 at 8:30 AM for 21st CCLC or 9:00 AM for Panther Cafe. We will be exploring ways to assist our families in need of assistance with transportation. Thanks for supporting  our schools’ literacy and afterschool initiatives.
