No Act of Kindness is Too Small

Quote of the Week:

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

—Mahatma Gandhi

Monday is a B day.

Shout Outs!

Students, parent, and community members - Is there someone at Hilsman to whom you would like to give a public "shout out" for something positive they have done? We have so many positive activities going on here at Hilsman, and we need to get the word out! If you would like to give someone a shout out, please share it with us in the form below. You may give a shout out to a student, teacher, staff member, etc. and we will share it with them. Your shout out may also make the Panther News! You may also video your shout out (15 seconds or less) and upload it to the folder linked here.

Georgia Student Health Survey

On Tuesday, December 15th, our students will be participating in the Georgia Student Health Survey 2.0 (GSHS 2.0), which is an anonymous, statewide survey instrument that identifies school climate issues that impact student achievement.  The survey is anonymous
and parents/guardians should be given the option to “opt out” if desired.

The data collected from the survey will be used to identify critical areas of need for our Safe and Drug-Free Schools efforts. Survey analysis of the data provides information/data that:

 Meets the No Child Left Behind Title IV mandated data collection requirements;
 Promotes a classroom atmosphere that allows teachers to teach and students to learn; and
 Develops and offers experiences that involve students in applying the concepts of making healthy decisions, accepting responsibility for behaviors, and understanding consequences.

Our desire is to involve parents in the education of their children. If you do not wish for
your child to participate in this important activity, please notify the school in writing no later than Friday, December 11th.
Copies of the Georgia Student Health Survey 2.0 questions are available online.

Georgia Parent Survey - Please take 5 Minutes!

The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, we hope you will complete the survey while in the building for parent conferences. All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

Parents may access a link to the Georgia Parent Survey under the "School Links" section of each school's webpage, or by clicking on the link below.

This Thursday will be an exciting day at Hilsman as the whole school will participate in the International Hour of Code. This event is designed to promote student understanding and engagement in computer science. according to the Hour of Code website, "Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path." We are looking forward to this event and helping our students see the possibilities that exist for them!

Intentional Acts of Kindness Month

Three years ago we began a tradition at Hilsman of making December a month of kindness. Throughout this month, we encourage the Hilsman community to commit intentional acts of kindness toward others. Sites like Random Acts of Kindness and Kindspring have lists of ideas to help you get started. You might even want to take the 21 Day Gratitude Challenge from  At Hilsman, each grade level will have a Grinch, and the goal will be to fill the Grinch with hearts that have our acts of kindness written on them. Please join us in helping to make our community a kinder place during the month of December. Watch this video about the "butterfly effect" of one person's acts of kindness:
