Benchmarks Begin This Week

This week we will begin administering our county-wide Spring benchmarks. Each day of administration, we will run our testing schedule, which allows students to attend all daily classes except ELT. We will test first thing each morning, from 8:25 until 10:15, so please help us by ensuring that your child arrives to school on time and either eats breakfast at home or at school.

Our benchmarks are given in two parts. Part one is selected response and is conducted online. Part two is constructed response, and is given paper/pencil. The benchmarks allow us the opportunity to assess how well our students are mastering the standards without waiting until the end of the year for a high stakes test. By doing so, we can adjust our teaching to ensure that we are delivering instruction that meets our students' needs. Below is the schedule for this week.

Monday, 2/23 ELA part 1

Tuesday, 2/24 ELA part 2

Wednesday, 2/25 No benchmark given

Thursday, 2/26 Science part 1

Friday, 2/27 Science part 2

Georgia School Parents' Survey

It’s time once again to take the Georgia School Parents’ Survey, as part of each school’s College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI) scores. The deadline for the survey is Fri., Feb. 27.

This survey is critical in the state's assessment in assigning a School Climate Star Rating to each school and is different than the Title I Survey you recently took. The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete - and again is crucial in rating our schools. Please note this does not replace our annual School Improvement Survey, as that is our internal diagnostic survey.
School Climate survey results are confidential and will not be made public or posted online. I appreciate your time and consideration, as your feedback is both needed and appreciated.
The survey is located here: http://www.clarke.k12.ga.us/survey

Thanks in advance for your valuable participation! To those of you who have already taken it, thank you!

Quote: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Eleanor Roosevelt

Monday is an B day.

Congratulations!

  • The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team won the Regional championship on Saturday in Greensboro. George Walton Academy came in second, and Clarke Middle came in third. Next up is Divisional! Way to go, Panthers!

  • Last week I inadvertantly left off Nathaniel Lance, who also placed at the Regional Science Fair. Way to go, Nathaniel!

Valentine's Dance This Thursday!

This Thursday, the 8th grade is sponsoring a school-wide dance from 4-6 p.m. in the New Gym. The cost of the dance is $3. Students will be asked to begin calling their rides around 5:40 p.m. All rides should be at Hilsman to pick up their students no later than 6:00. We want all students to enjoy the dance; however, please be mindful that students who are not picked up in a timely manner will not have the opportunity to attend the next dance.

All A Honor Incentive

This week our All A Honor Roll students will have a special incentive during First Period on Friday.

High School Counselors to Visit Hilsman

On Tuesday - Thursday this week, Mrs. Gaertig's, Mr. Dorsey's, and Ms. Zabetakis' classes will sponsor a Valentine's photo booth as a fundraiser for their Community Based Instruction field trips. News for the Week of February 2nd

Quote: "We must give our teachers the tools and trust to be successful." - State Supt. Richard Woods

Monday is an A day.

Congratulations!

This was a big week for Hilsman! Congratulations go out to the following:

  • Boys' Basketball Team for winning the Area Championship;
  • Regional Science Fair winners:
    • Amanda Wise, 3rd place
    • Fritz Frankowiak, 2nd place
    • Amelia Pisarik, Aminata Ba, Tykerious Monford, and Perry Thomas, whose Science Fair Projects won first place (they will move on to state competition);
  • Panther Step Team who were invited and performed at the Classic Center Face Off.
Below are a couple of photos from this week's events!

The Panther Steppers in action!

Quarter 2 Celebrations

On Friday we had our Quarter Two Celebrations Assembies for each grade level. We recognized Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Science and Social Studies Fair participants, Spelling Bee participants, and DAR and MLK winners.

This Thursday, February 5th, students who made A honor roll, A/B honor roll, or Perfect Attendance will be allowed to be out of uniform. Remember we still must follow CCSD dress policy. No pajamas, ripped jeans, tank tops, or other clothing items that would be considered distracting to the learning environment.

Save the Date!

Please mark February 13th on your calendar. This date will be our quarter 3 staff appreciation event. During their lunch period, teachers will be able to enjoy a duty free lunch with their colleagues, with food provided by the administrators. We are calling it our "iHeart Teachers Valentine Luncheon." If you as a parent are interested in helping supply any items for the luncheon such as paper products, drinks, or desserts, please contact Ms. Tanya Dillard-Jernigan, Hilsman's secretary/bookkeeper.

Mean Stinks' Biggest. Assembly. Ever.

On Wednesday, February 4th, meanstinks.com is hosting the "Biggest Assembly Ever" to galvanize our youth to "gang up for good." We will run a modified schedule that day and participate in this nationwide assembly from our classrooms. The organizers are asking students to participate in the assembly through the use of their cell phones, so students who have their phones will be permitted to use them to participate in the assembly. Once the assembly is over, the "No Flex Zone" will be in place again. This is a great opportunity to continue to send an anti-bullying message to our students, and aligns with our "No Place for Hate" philosophy at Hilsman.

8th Graders Going to See "Selma"

On February 3rd, eighth grade students will be going on a field trip to view the movie “Selma”. We would like for every 8th grade student to have the opportunity to view this movie, as it has direct connections with the standards they study in Georgia Studies. Please return the permission form by Monday, February 2nd. We also do not want cost to be a barrier, and we have scholarships available. Please see Ms. Griffith or your homeroom teacher for more information.

Parents are invited to attend our Impact Check run through on Monday, February 2nd in the media center at 4:00. This is a time when we will be going through the information we will share about our school improvement progress with district leaders in a separate meeting later this week. It is a great opportunity for those who are interested to hear more about what we are doing as a school community to ensure that our students have every opportunity for success.
