21st Century Community Learning Centers

Students and parents, this week please be sure to submit an application for The 21st Century Community Learning Center, the largest federally funded after school program in the nation. At Hilsman, it will be STE[A]M (science, technology, engineering, art and math) focused to support math and literacy through project-based learning.

Explore the aspects of theater, learn about robotics, explore the culinary arts, or learn about crime investigation (CSI) and more. Help personalize the program to fit your interest. It begins with an application. Please see Ms. Hayes for an application during lunch or pick up one in the main office. Let’s make this program one that benefits you and our entire community. Here's 2 min. video about the program: https://y4y.ed.gov/about/

Quote of the Week: "Do what is right, not what is easy." Unknown

Title I Parent Meeting/Open House/Curriculum Night

Thanks to those who came to provide input on our Parent Compact. Our annual Title I Curriculum meeting will be THIS Thursday, August 27th, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be immediately followed by our Open House at 6:30. Please join us!

Keeping Our Children Safe

You may have seen the letter from Dr. Lanoue regarding our safety procedures when threat is made against the school. I have linked it HERE for your convenience.

We had a very normal rest of the week. Some of you have had questions about the specifics of the incident, how teachers responded, and what our follow-up will be. I will address what I can here. I cannot provide specific information about the threat as it is under investigation by the Athens Clarke-County Police Department. They were very thorough in their investigation while on our campus.

After school, we debriefed as a staff to discuss this specific situation and reviewed all safety procedures in our district Emergency Operations Manual. We also shared the guidance given to us by our district Police Chief, Fabian Jones, and our district Director of Social Work, Dawn Meyers, which our staff found to be very helpful.

We will continue to be cautious and alert to anything that might seem out of the ordinary and respond appropriately. We have several local police officers who check on us regularly and patrol the area. Our SRO, Officer Johnson, makes regular perimeter checks to ensure that our building is secure throughout the day. If you have questions about our district emergency procedures you can contact our district Security Department. If you would like to talk to our counselors, Joy Moore or Tanesha Callahan, about how to talk to your children about any of their concerns, their contact information is: moorea@clarke.k12.ga.us or callahant@clarke.k12.ga.us.

Technology

This week students received their Personal Learning Devices (PLDs). Below are some related links, including a list of digital resources your child can access at home, as well as the Handbook (both English and Spanish versions). The district is aware that there has been some connectivity issues at home related to one of our filters. They are working to resolve that issue.

#incredible1stday and Week!

We had an amazing first week at Hilsman, which began with our Welcome Assembly on the first day, and ended with our First Friday Field Day! Here are a few scenes from the first week of school:

Technology

We will be distributing Personal Learning Devices to students this week. Each student will be receiving a Chromebook device, either a Lenovo in 7th and 8th grades, or a Samsung in 6th grade.

Here are some reminders:

  1. Students will bring home both the charger and the device.
  2. Students are expected to charge their devices overnight each night at home.
  3. Each student/family should access the PLD Handbook found on the district website:

Nutrition Information

As you know by now, this year, every child in CCSD will be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free! There is no paperwork to complete. If your child has a balance on their lunch account, they may use the funds to purchase extra milk or juice, etc. If you prefer to receive a refund, please see Ms. Stookey, our nutrition manager.

The first week of lunch usually takes a bit longer, due to students getting back into the routine and our making adjustments each day to get all 700 students fed. This week should be better. Lunch periods are 25 minutes long, which typically provides adequate time for students to get their lunch and eat. We will be monitoring the situation and will adjust as needed.

Picture Day

Picture Day is Thursday, August 27,2015. Stay tuned for more info coming soon!

Are You Ready for HilFest 2015?

Quote of the Week: "Education is the passport to our future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." - Malcolm X

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! I would like to invite you to HilFest, our back to school event this year. HilFest will take place Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (rain or shine). At HilFest you will be able to meet your child’s teaching team for the year and receive information about various organizations and programs at Hilsman by visiting information booths. There will be tours of the facilities, and new families can participate in a short orientation at 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30. We have a number of Athens area businesses and organizations that will be providing activities, information, music and food as well, so stop by for a few minutes, or stay the whole morning. The best part is that it is all FREE!

We want your child to be happy at Hilsman; we try to create a safe environment where courtesy and kindness prevail and where there is respect for differences in other people, customs, and cultures. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring that all students receive challenging, personalized instruction in all classes, and teachers collaboratively plan to improve student achievement and to build relationships. For our students to reach the level of success we desire, we need everyone to partner with us! There are many ways for our parents and community members to get involved by becoming active members of the PTO and by volunteering.

Everyone Eats for Free!

This year, every child in CCSD will be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free! There is no paperwork to complete. If your child has a balance on their lunch account, they may use the funds to purchase extra milk or juice, etc. If you prefer to receive a refund, please see Ms. Stookey, our nutrition manager.

Reminders for the New School Year

  • Our school hours are from 8:25 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The building opens for students at 7:45 a.m. We cannot guarantee supervision of students prior to that time, so please do not drop your student off earlier unless they are here for a supervised activity and prior arrangements have been made. Access the daily schedule here.

  • Students are tardy if they arrive after 8:25 and must check in at the front office. Parents should refrain from checking out students between 3:15 – 3:45. Not only is this the most hectic time of day in the front office, but students will miss valuable academic time if checked out early on a regular basis.
  • Students are expected to wear uniforms Monday through Friday. The principal may allow students to dress out of uniform for special occasions to show their participation in school activities. If coaches permit, athletes may wear team jerseys on game days, as long as the khaki pants are still worn. Hilsman logo shirts (i.e. SET team shirts, Pride of the Panther shirts, band shirts, etc.) and individual team shirts will be permitted on Friday ONLY and must be worn with khaki pants. Access the uniform dress policy here.
  • Seventh grade parents, the school nurse needs a copy of the updated immunization record for your child. It can be brought to school and placed in Nurse Hurley’s mailbox once school begins.
  • All students will be issued a device to take home this year, just like a textbook. All middle school students will have Chromebooks for use. There is no paperwork to complete and no fees to pay.
