Celebrating Dr. King's Legacy - January 18th

Quote of the Week:

Tuesday is a B day.

I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! This week we have visitors from Switzerland stopping by to speak with some of our math teachers and observe how we are using Waggle as a learning tool for math. Also on Tuesday, we will begin our semi-monthly IB Enrichment Academies. The IB Enrichment academies are similar in some ways to enrichment clusters in elementary school, but are geared more toward the middle school student and are incorporating some aspect of our IB philosophy and framework. Students were able to express a preference for which class they attend, and they will participate in that class twice monthly for the remainder of the year. There will be a culminating activity in May where students will be able to share related to what they studied with others and the community. IB Enrichment Academies will be held every other Tuesday opposite our advisement days. We will run an afternoon activity schedule on those days and the classes will meet during the last period of the day.

Students Serve on State Advisory Council

Hilsman is proud to have not one but TWO students serving on the State Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. They travel to Atlanta approximately once per month to join with other middle schoolers from across the state to share ideas about how to make education better.

Tristan L. is one of two students serving on the State Advisory Council.

Thomas P. is one of two students who meets with superintendent Woods monthly.

Traveling Nat Geo Map Comes to Hilsman

Our 7th grade students had a unique opportunity this week to participate in learning activities using an oversized map that is traveling to schools across the region courtesy of National Geographic. Students had a great time using the knowledge they have learned about geography, various countries, and map skills to participate in a variety of games and learning activities.

Shout Outs!

Students, parent, and community members - Is there someone at Hilsman to whom you would like to give a public "shout out" for something positive they have done? We have so many positive activities going on here at Hilsman, and we need to get the word out! If you would like to give someone a shout out, please share it with us in the form below. You may give a shout out to a student, teacher, staff member, etc. and we will share it with them.

Georgia Parent Survey

We have had 46 individuals take the Georgia Parent Survey. If you have not done so, would you please take five minutes to complete it today? The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, you may come to Hilsman and we will provide you with a device to take the survey.
All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

Parents may access a link to the Georgia Parent Survey under the "School Links" section of each school's webpage, or by clicking on the link below.

Art in the Media Center

This week we also had the pleasure of having artist and Hilsman parent, Jamie Calkin, share his work with our students as he painted a mural for our media center. The work is stunning and is a beautiful addition. The students enjoyed learning about the techniques he uses and the choices he makes as he creates works of art.

Grade Level Newsletters

Just in case you may not have received the newsletter for your child's grade this past week (6th grade will be coming home this week), here are links to each of them.
