Happy 2016!

Quote of the Week:

Tuesday is a B day.

Welcome Back! Let's PAWS to Have a Fantastic 2nd Semester!

The first week of school this semester we will be in homeroom during ELT to reteach PAWS behavior, do community building activities, and reinforce our expectations as a welcoming, positive, kind school community. This will allow us time as it always does to reconfigure our ELTs based on our benchmark analysis and other data.

Here are some of the lessons that students will participate in over the next week. Please help us by reinforcing these expectations at home as well.

PAWS in the Cafeteria

Also, here are some general reminders:

  • Our school hours are from 8:25 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The building opens for students at 7:45 a.m. We cannot guarantee supervision of students prior to that time, so please do not drop your student off earlier unless they are here for a supervised activity and prior arrangements have been made. Access the daily schedule here.
  • Students are tardy if they arrive after 8:25 and must check in at the front office. Parents should refrain from checking out students between 3:15 – 3:45. Not only is this the most hectic time of day in the front office, but students will miss valuable academic time if checked out early on a regular basis.
  • Students are expected to wear uniforms Monday through Friday. The principal may allow students to dress out of uniform for special occasions to show their participation in school activities. If coaches permit, athletes may wear team jerseys on game days, as long as the khaki pants are still worn. Hilsman logo shirts (i.e. SET team shirts, Pride of the Panther shirts, band shirts, etc.) and individual team shirts will be permitted on Friday ONLY and must be worn with khaki pants. Access the uniform dress policy here.
  • If students miss school, they miss out. Chronic absenteeism, (missing 10% of the school year) is strongly correlated with negative impact on achievement and higher dropout rates. Keeping our children healthy and ensuring that they are at school every day becomes of greater importance. High absenteeism negatively impacts the school as well, since attendance rate for CCRPI is calculated based on the number of students who miss less than six days of school.

Device Check This Week

This week on Wednesday and Thursday we will be completing our midyear device check for all students. Please ensure that your student brings his/her device each day this week.

Shout Outs!

Students, parent, and community members - Is there someone at Hilsman to whom you would like to give a public "shout out" for something positive they have done? We have so many positive activities going on here at Hilsman, and we need to get the word out! If you would like to give someone a shout out, please share it with us in the form below. You may give a shout out to a student, teacher, staff member, etc. and we will share it with them. Your shout out may also make the Panther News!

Georgia Parent Survey

We have had 34 individuals take the Georgia Parent Survey. If you have not done so, would you please take five minutes to complete it today? The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, you may come to Hilsman and we will provide you with a device to take the survey.
All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

Parents may access a link to the Georgia Parent Survey under the "School Links" section of each school's webpage, or by clicking on the link below.
